Starbucks Takes Strategic Steps: San Antonio Stores Impacted

At least two Starbucks locations in San Antonio will be among several hundreds closing across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Though Starbucks has not disclosed the total number of closures, its store locator will be updated by Sunday.

Support and Transition Plans for Affected Employees

Starbucks has announced that affected staff will have access to severance packages and opportunities to transfer to other locations where feasible. The coffee giant projects it will have 18,300 North American locations by the end of its fiscal year on Sunday, a decrease from 18,734 locations as of June 29.

Analyst Insights: Implications of Store Closures

According to a research note from TD Cowen analyst Andrew Charles, Starbucks is expected to shutter approximately 500 North American stores in its fiscal fourth quarter. A review of the company’s locations identified stores lacking financial stability or the ability to meet customer expectations as those set for closure.

Starbucks’ Commitment to Community and Quality

CEO Niccol emphasized the challenging nature of these closures, noting the importance of Starbucks cafes as community hubs. Despite the difficulties, the company plans to invest $1 billion in restructuring efforts, including $150 million for employee separation benefits and $850 million to cover physical store closings and lease exits.

Union Response and Worker Negotiations

The closures have prompted responses from Starbucks Workers United, who criticized the lack of consultation with baristas. The union plans to negotiate for affected employees to ensure they can opt for transfers to preferred locations.

Future Outlook: Store Redesigns and Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, Starbucks aims to increase its North American store count in the next fiscal year and intends to redesign over 1,000 locations within the year to enhance customer experience. Despite the current reduction, Starbucks remains focused on long-term growth and adaptation to market demands.

The company also reported a continuous decline in same-store sales for six quarters. To combat this, Starbucks plans to bolster staffing, cozy up its stores, and introduce advanced ordering systems to expedite service.
