China Open: Jannik Sinner Battles Past Terence Atmane as Carlos Alcaraz Dominates Zizou Bergs to Secure Japan Quarter-Finals Spot

Top Performances at the China Open: Sinner and Alcaraz Advance to Quarter-Finals
Jannik Sinner Secures Spot in China Open Quarter-Finals
World No. 2 Jannik Sinner faced a challenging match against France’s Terence Atmane, ultimately triumphing 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 to advance to the China Open quarter-finals. The Italian player has now improved his record in Beijing to an impressive 11-1. Next, he will compete against Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in the last eight.
Sinner started strong, taking the first set with relative ease after breaking Atmane’s serve in the third game. However, Atmane made a comeback by clinching the second set 7-5. In the third set, Atmane’s struggle with cramps allowed Sinner to dominate and win without losing a game, concluding the match in two hours and 21 minutes.
“His [Atmane’s] game style is unique, and being a lefty makes it more challenging,” Sinner shared. “Despite his cramps in the third set, it was a tricky second-round match. I was ahead in the second but couldn’t capitalize. It’s part of the sport. Concentration and nerves can fluctuate, but I’m delighted to be moving on to the next round.”
Alcaraz Advances with Confident Victory in Japan Open
World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz displayed a dominant performance, defeating Belgium’s Zizou Bergs 6-4, 6-3 to secure his place in the Japan Open quarter-finals. Despite an awkward fall on his left ankle during his opening match in Tokyo, Alcaraz showcased his resilience and skill, reaching his 13th tournament quarter-final this year.
Although Bergs managed three breaks against Alcaraz in a match that lasted one hour and 19 minutes, he couldn’t claim a set from the seasoned Spaniard. Alcaraz effectively countered Bergs’ serves and sealed the win with his renowned drop shot and a decisive forehand.
“It was tough,” Alcaraz stated. “I had to recover swiftly, thanks to my world-class physio. I felt some concern about my ankle, but overall, I played a strong match.”
Alex De Minaur Overcomes Struggle to Advance
Third seed Alex De Minaur faced a formidable challenge against France’s lucky loser Arthur Rinderknech but emerged victorious with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(2) win. This hard-earned triumph pushes De Minaur to the next competition stage, where he aims to continue his successful run.
