Canadian tennis sensation Victoria Mboko has faced difficulties maintaining her winning momentum from this past summer. The 19-year-old suffered a defeat against Russia’s Anastasia Potapova, with scores of 7-6 (5), 7-5, in the second round of the China Open on Saturday.

Impact of Wrist Injury on Mboko’s Performance

After claiming victory at the National Bank Open in Montreal in August, Mboko has struggled in her subsequent matches. Her challenges began with a wrist injury sustained during the semifinals of the NBO, which appeared to affect her performance at the U.S. Open. There, she faced a 6-3, 6-2 loss against Barbora Krejcikova from Czechia in the opening round.

China Open: A Tough Return

Saturday’s match against Potapova marked Mboko’s return to competitive play following her August 26 loss. Entering the WTA Tour 1000 event as a seeded player, ranked 23rd globally, she received a first-round bye. Potapova, who has ascended to a career-high rank of No. 21 in 2023, is the world No. 59.
