Luton Town Dismisses Manager Matt Bloomfield After Nine Months

Luton Town has made the decision to dismiss manager Matt Bloomfield after a challenging nine-month tenure. Currently sitting 11th in League One, the club’s position followed a disappointing loss to Stevenage on Saturday.
Managerial Changes at Luton Town
Bloomfield took the helm at Luton in January, leaving Wycombe Wanderers, who were performing well in League One at the time. His appointment came after the departure of Rob Edwards. Despite initial optimism, Bloomfield could not prevent Luton from suffering a second consecutive relegation, finishing 22nd in the Championship. The final match against West Bromwich Albion ended in a 5-3 defeat, sealing their fate.
Performance Overview
The early part of the current season showed promise, with Luton winning three out of their first four matches. However, the team’s form deteriorated quickly, resulting in four losses in the subsequent seven games.
Club Statement on Dismissal
A club statement highlighted that “performances and results from the opening 11 matches of the current campaign in League One have fallen below the levels expected.” Bloomfield’s record included 12 wins and 14 losses over 33 matches.
Support Staff Departures
- Richard Thomas – Assistant Manager
- Lee Harrison – First-Team Coach
- Ben Cirne – Analyst
Along with Bloomfield, key staff members have also left Kenilworth Road. Following their departure, Alex Lawless, an academy coach and former Luton player, has been appointed as interim manager. He will lead the team ahead of the EFL Trophy game against Cambridge United.
Future Plans
The club is now beginning the search for a new manager. This process will involve a committee that includes members from the executive team, recruitment, football staff, and the board. With two weeks of training before the next league match, Luton aims to find a solution that will elevate the team’s performance moving forward.
