Mayor Reed expressed his dissatisfaction with comments from Attorney General Marshall, who labeled the situation in Montgomery a crisis. In response, Reed emphasized the ongoing efforts to combat crime in the capital city. He stated, “If the attorney general would like to discuss our initiatives, I would welcome the conversation.”
The recent shootout in downtown Montgomery resulted in two fatalities and left twelve others injured. Among the injured, five individuals sustain life-threatening injuries. Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys reported that victims included seven individuals under the age of 20, with the youngest being only 16 years old.

Jeremiah Morris, 17, and Shalanda Williams, 43, tragically lost their lives in this incident. City Leadership’s Position

In contrast, Mayor Reed opposes the idea of utilizing the National Guard for street patrols, insisting that local law enforcement is best equipped to handle these situations. He stated, “I’m fervently against that 100%.” Reed urged for an examination of bail and bond policies to prevent dangerous individuals from roaming the streets.
He also suggested reassessing the state law that lifted concealed carry permit requirements. “We cannot continue down the same path; that’s not fair to the victims and their families,” he emphasized.
