Leicester Girl with Rare Condition Receives Help from BBC’s DIY SOS

A seven-year-old girl from Leicester, Isla Screaton Kilpatrick, is receiving crucial help through the BBC’s DIY SOS program. Isla suffers from Mandibuloacral Dysplasia, a rare genetic condition that affects bone growth and causes premature aging of major organs. As the only person in the UK diagnosed with this condition, her daily life presents significant challenges.

Community Unites to Support Isla

The DIY SOS team, spearheaded by Nick Knowles, has taken on the task of transforming Isla’s home in Aylestone. This initiative aims to enhance her independence by making necessary modifications to the property. The family requested specific alterations, including lowering door handles and switches and constructing a downstairs bathroom to accommodate Isla’s needs.

Volunteer Efforts and Support

A call for assistance by the BBC last year resulted in an overwhelming response. Over 1,000 volunteer tradesmen applied to contribute to Isla’s project. Ultimately, around 160 dedicated volunteers came together to ensure the successful adaptation of her home.
