BMW Recalls 145,000 Vehicles Due to Fire Risk

BMW has announced a significant recall of over 145,000 vehicles due to a fire risk linked to starter motor malfunctions. This decision was made public on September 25, as posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website. The recall encompasses 145,102 units in total, impacting several popular models.

Details of the BMW Recall

The specific models affected by this recall include:

  • 2019 to 2020 BMW X5 – 82,153 vehicles
  • 2019 to 2020 BMW X7 – 24,979 vehicles
  • 2020 to 2025 BMW 840I – 12,456 vehicles
  • 2020 to 2022 BMW 740LI – 11,893 vehicles
  • 2020 BMW 340I – 10,867 vehicles
  • 2020 BMW X6 – 2,754 vehicles

The primary concern with these models is that the engine starter may not perform correctly. This dysfunction can lead to engine overheating and, in some instances, fire. Drivers might notice smoke or smell burning while operating their vehicles.

Past Recall Context

This recall includes vehicles that were previously addressed in an August 2024 recall (24V576). That issue also involved starter motor overheating which posed a fire risk. BMW initially communicated the problem through owner notification letters sent on September 27, 2024, and offered to update vehicle software for free.

BMW’s Response and Repairs

To remedy this situation, BMW has committed to replacing the affected engine starters with a newly designed component at no cost to the vehicle owners. Those who previously incurred expenses for repairs related to this issue may be eligible for reimbursement.

In an effort to communicate effectively, BMW has apprised its dealers about the recall on September 25, and they will issue letters to affected drivers on November 17. Vehicle owners can verify their vehicle identification numbers on the NHTSA website starting November 17.
