In his new role, Lee will act as the chief soccer officer, bringing a wealth of experience to the organization. His responsibilities will encompass a variety of crucial areas within Sporting Kansas City’s soccer operations, including:

  • First-team roster management

  • Developmental strategies for Sporting KC II and the Sporting KC Academy

Lee will report directly to the club’s ownership group, overseeing both Sporting Director Mike Burns and interim head coach Kerry Zavagnin.

Before joining Sporting Kansas City, David Lee served as the Sporting Director at New York City FC (NYCFC). His tenure there was marked by substantial achievements, including:

  • Winning the 2021 MLS Cup and the 2022 Campeones Cup
  • Seven consecutive playoff appearances from 2016 to 2022
  • Leading NYCFC in regular season points (523) from 2016 to 2025

Since being named Sporting Director in 2019, Lee signed 14 of the club’s 17 Homegrown Players, including the youngest player in MLS history. His decade at NYCFC has been characterized by a commitment to developing homegrown talent that has succeeded in both MLS and international competitions.
