Grand Canyon North Rim Set to Partially Reopen on October 1 After Dragon Bravo Fire

Grand Canyon National Park to Reopen North Rim Following Dragon Bravo Fire
As of October 1, 2025, select areas of the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park will reopen to the public after the aftermath of the Dragon Bravo Fire. This much-anticipated reopening will provide access to scenic locations, allowing visitors to once again experience the beauty this area has to offer.
Details of the Reopening: Areas and Access
The reopening will include:
- Highway 67 extending to Cape Royal Road, approximately at mile marker 10
- Access to Point Imperial and Cape Royal
- Opening of Fire Point and Swamp Ridge
These areas will be accessible daily from official sunrise to official sunset until November 30, 2025, or until the first major snowfall occurs. It’s important to note that overnight camping will only be permitted at Swamp Point and Fire Point.
Official Statement from Park Management
Grand Canyon National Park Superintendent Ed Keable remarked, “Reopening portions of the North Rim allows visitors to once again experience some of the park’s most scenic areas while we continue to assess post-fire impacts and begin recovery efforts. This is the first of several phased reopenings planned for the North Rim, and we appreciate the public’s patience as we work diligently to restore access.”
Continued Safety Concerns and Closures
Despite the partial reopening, many areas of the North Rim will remain closed due to safety concerns related to the Dragon Bravo Fire. The North Kaibab Trail is also closed until further notice because of extensive damage and rockfalls. Visitors can stay updated on current trail conditions and closures by visiting: El-Balad.
Visitor Advisory: Caution in Reopened Areas
While exploring the reopened areas, visitors are encouraged to exercise caution due to potential hazards such as:
- Dead or standing trees
- Risk of flash flooding
- Active recovery work zones
Given the remote nature of the North Rim, visitors should be fully self-sufficient, bringing all necessary food, water, and supplies. The reopened areas currently lack power, running water, cell service, or visitor services. Additionally, no fuel is available within the park, so planning ahead is essential.
Travel and Accommodation Information
Travelers should be aware that emergency response will be limited, and response times may be significantly delayed. Winter weather can also impact driving conditions, so being prepared for icy roads and variable weather is crucial.
Vehicles over 22 feet in length are prohibited on Cape Royal Road due to tight turns and narrow roadways. For those seeking overnight stays, lodging is available outside the park in the following locations:
- Kaibab Lodge
- Jacob Lake
- Marble Canyon
- Page
- Fredonia
- Kanab, Utah
The nearest fuel stations are at the North Rim Country Store and Jacob Lake. Make sure to prepare accordingly for an unforgettable experience in this stunning natural landscape.
