Pope Highlights Role of Catechists in Guiding Lifelong Faith Journeys at Mass

Stirring Call to Faith: Pope Leo XIV Celebrates Jubilee of Catechists in St. Peter’s Square
Highlights from Pope Leo XIV’s Homily
Pope Leo XIV delivered an inspiring message during the Jubilee of Catechists held in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday. He commended those who dedicate their lives to guiding others in faith and urged all Christians to assist one another in learning to believe, hope, and love.
The Gospel Message of Justice and Compassion
Reflecting on the day’s Gospel reading (Lk 16:19-31), Pope Leo XIV revisited the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, which was also the focus during the Holy Year of Mercy in 2016. The Pope highlighted how Jesus uses this story to illustrate God’s perspective on the world. He noted the stark contrast between Lazarus, suffering at the doorstep, and the rich man living in luxury.
“At the doorstep of today’s opulence stands the misery of entire peoples, ravaged by war and exploitation,” said the Pope, emphasizing the perpetual nature of these social injustices. He reassured the congregation that while many Lazaruses die unheeded, divine justice prevails as God ends the sufferings of the poor and the excesses of the rich.
The Role of Catechists in Proclaiming Truth
Highlighting the role of catechists, Pope Leo XIV underscored the significance of Jesus’ Resurrection as the central truth that redeems humanity, a truth that must be shared by the Church through its catechists. He explained that a catechist—inspired by the Greek origin of the word—serves as a vessel of proclamation, resonating the teachings of faith aloud.
“We have all been taught to believe through the witness of those who believed before us,” he remarked, recognizing catechists as lifelong companions in the faith journey. From childhood to old age, catechists play a crucial role in imparting faith and guiding believers.
Encouragement to Embrace Faith and Service
Pope Leo XIV urged catechists and all spiritual guides to embrace faith, aiding others on their spiritual paths. Echoing St. Augustine’s advice to Deacon Deogratias, he encouraged educators to facilitate a transformation in listeners, leading them from listening to belief, from belief to hope, and ultimately, from hope to love.
