Wentz Takes Charge as QB McCarthy Sidelined, Despite Weakened Offensive Line

Quarterback J.J. McCarthy of the Minnesota Vikings is set to miss his third consecutive game due to a high ankle sprain. His injury has kept him from practicing, including a canceled session on Friday due to rain at the team’s temporary facility outside London.

Wentz Takes Charge Despite Offensive Line Challenges

In McCarthy’s absence, veteran Carson Wentz will take the helm as the starting quarterback for the game against the Cleveland Browns at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Coach Kevin O’Connell expressed hope for McCarthy’s return following the bye week, emphasizing the need for cautious management of his condition.

Injury Updates and Team Adjustments

McCarthy suffered his injury during a game against the Atlanta Falcons on September 14. He played through the pain but reported significant discomfort the following day, preventing any practice since then. Meanwhile, Wentz has filled in admirably since taking over, throwing four touchdowns and two interceptions in his two starts.

  • McCarthy’s injury: High ankle sprain.
  • Wentz’s performance: 44 completions on 66 attempts, 523 yards, 4 touchdowns, 2 interceptions.

The Vikings’ offensive line will face considerable challenges due to multiple injuries. Key players ruled out include:

  • Ryan Kelly (Center) – concussion
  • Michael Jurgens (Backup Center) – hamstring
  • Brian O’Neill (Right Tackle) – knee
  • Donovan Jackson (Left Guard) – wrist

To compensate, Blake Brandel will transition to center, a position he has never played in a game. Rookie Joe Huber is projected to start at left guard, while Justin Skule will cover the right tackle position. Skule has prior experience starting earlier this season for the injured Christian Darrisaw.

Upcoming Schedule

After facing the Browns, the Vikings will return to play against the Philadelphia Eagles on October 19 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
