Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) is gearing up for its Family Weekend 2025, scheduled for October 2-5. The weekend promises a variety of engaging activities, including football highlights, culinary tastings, craft sales, outdoor movies, and the much-anticipated guest appearance by actor Danny Trejo.

Danny Trejo to Headline Family Weekend

Actor and entrepreneur Danny Trejo will speak at 6:30 p.m. on October 2 in Shryock Auditorium. Known for roles in films like “Desperado” and “Spy Kids,” Trejo’s career spans decades. He overcame significant personal challenges, including addiction, and has spent over 50 years advocating for others. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and attendees can look forward to a limited meet-and-greet session after his presentation.

Exciting Activities Planned

The Family Weekend includes a range of fun and memorable activities:

  • Taste of Carbondale: Scheduled for October 2 from 2-4 p.m. on the north lawn of Morris Library. Enjoy free samples from local restaurants.
  • Craft Sale: A two-day craft sale on October 3 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and October 4 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.), featuring unique creations.
  • Outdoor Movie Night: Families are invited to watch “Spy Kids” at 7 p.m. on October 3 at Itchy Jones Stadium.
  • Saluki Family Tailgate: Pre-football festivities on October 4 from 3-5 p.m. featuring DJs, games, and food.

Football Game Highlights

Football fans will enjoy the Saluki game against Indiana State University at 6 p.m. on October 4 at Saluki Stadium. Families can purchase tickets online using the promo code “FAMILY” for just $12. SIU students will be admitted free of charge. During halftime, the 2025 Saluki Family of the Year will be recognized for their contributions to the SIU community.

Additional Family Activities

This year’s Family Weekend also features:

  • Queer Cinema: A film screening of “Pelo Malo” on October 3, with discussions and complimentary snacks at the Morris Library Sharp Museum Auditorium.
  • Rocky Ledges 5K/10K Trail Fun Run/Walk: Taking place at 9 a.m. on October 4 at Touch of Nature.
  • Greek Sing Competition: A traditional event showcasing Greek organizations in song and dance on October 4 at noon.

Attendees can also dine at university dining halls for $9 per meal and enjoy free access to the Student Recreation Center and outdoor facilities all weekend.
