Sigur Rós & London Orchestra Deliver Waves of Refined Harmony
Sigur Rós & London Orchestra

Sigur Rós has returned with their latest album, Átta, marking their first release in a decade. This album sees the Icelandic band move away from the industrial sound of Kveikur, embracing the grand orchestral tones that fans cherish. Currently, they are on a unique tour where they collaborate with various classical music ensembles in each city they visit.

Collaboration with the London Contemporary Orchestra

During their recent performance at the Royal Albert Hall, Sigur Rós teamed up with the London Contemporary Orchestra. This collaboration succeeded harmoniously, merging both musical traditions seamlessly. The visual aesthetic was equally striking, with artists adorned in monochrome under a canopy of star-like lights.

A Night of Refined Musical Harmony

  • Concert pieces included selections from their new album, Átta, such as “Blóðberg.”
  • Jónsi’s voice, renowned for its clarity, resonated beautifully amidst the orchestral backdrop.
  • The crowd responded warmly, especially during the performance of fan-favorite “Starálfur.”

The performance achieved an elegant sophistication, enhanced by the remarkable solo from guest vocalist Malakai Bayoh. His striking rendition during the closing of “Varðeldur” captivated the audience, bringing moments of intense beauty. However, the concert maintained a polished tone that often kept it from reaching complete transcendence.

Dynamic Moments Amidst Serenity

While the overall atmosphere was serene, there were bursts of energy throughout the concert. Notable highlights included Jónsi’s experimental guitar feedback during “Von” and the lively interplay of glockenspiel and brass in “Sé Lest.” These moments provided welcomed energy, enriching the overall experience.

The concert culminated in a powerful performance of “Ára Bátur,” featuring the Schola Cantorum choir from Cardinal Vaughan School. Accompanied by Anna Lapwood on the grand organ, the build-up led to an irresistible crescendo. This tension ultimately spilled into their most recognized track, “Hoppípola,” creating a thrilling climax.

Future Tour Dates

After the Royal Albert Hall performances from October 1-3, Sigur Rós is set to continue their tour in the Netherlands, followed by shows in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The collaboration with the London Contemporary Orchestra demonstrated the band’s ability to innovate while honoring their roots. Sigur Rós’s blend of refined musical harmony remains captivating to audiences worldwide.
