BCGEU Strike Intensifies: More Liquor, Cannabis Stores Behind Picket Lines
The B.C. General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) has intensified its province-wide strike, adding more workers and stores to the picket lines. This escalation marks the fifth week of the strike, which shows no sign of resolution between the union and the provincial government. On Friday, nearly 900 additional members joined the action from 22 different worksites.
Strike Expansion Details
As part of the ongoing strike, 20 more B.C. liquor and cannabis stores have joined the BCGEU’s efforts. This includes front-line staff from various ministries, such as:
- Ministry of Environment and Parks
- Children and Family Development
- Energy and Climate Solutions
- Water, Land and Resource Stewardship
Paul Finch, the BCGEU president, expressed strong support for the union’s members. He stated, “Our members are showing incredible strength and resolve.” He further emphasized the urgency for the government to return to negotiations with a serious wage offer.
Importance of Fair Wages
Finch highlighted that the pressure on public services increases daily as the government delays action. He stressed that public service workers deserve wages that align with the rising cost of living. The current government’s proposal of a five percent wage increase over two years has been met with resistance from the union. Finch noted that this figure does not reflect a genuine increase in wages for all members.
Public Support for the Strike
In a show of solidarity, hundreds of BCGEU members and supporters marched through downtown Vancouver on Wednesday. This demonstration underscores the union’s readiness to escalate job actions until their demands are met.
