Rangers Prioritize Schumaker in Managerial Search

The Texas Rangers are prioritizing Skip Schumaker in their search for a new manager. Schumaker, who was named the National League Manager of the Year in 2023, has been a special adviser for the organization. President of baseball operations Chris Young confirmed Schumaker as the lead internal candidate.

Rangers’ Managerial Search Process

Chris Young stated that he has initiated formal interviews for the managerial vacancy but has no current external candidates in mind. The Rangers aim to hire from within, hoping to avoid looking outside the organization.

Schumaker’s Background

  • Skip Schumaker was the NL Manager of the Year in 2023.
  • He led the Miami Marlins to an 84-78 record, securing the team’s fourth postseason appearance.
  • Schumaker joined the Rangers in November, positioning him as a potential successor to Bruce Bochy.
  • He has been a part of the Rangers’ advisory team, actively engaging with the front office.

Before joining the Marlins, Schumaker served as a bench coach in St. Louis. He played 11 seasons in Major League Baseball, primarily with the Cardinals, during their 2011 World Series victory over the Rangers. His experience includes stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds.

Future of Bruce Bochy

Bruce Bochy, the previous manager and four-time World Series champion, concluded his tenure with the Rangers following a 81-81 season. The organization and Bochy mutually agreed to part ways after his three-year contract ended. He could transition into an advisory role within the Rangers or possibly explore opportunities with the San Francisco Giants, although he is not in contention for their managerial position.

Current Landscape of Managerial Vacancies

The Rangers are not the only team seeking a new manager, with seven other Major League Baseball clubs currently in similar situations. Although other teams may express interest in Schumaker, Young has indicated that he does not feel pressured concerning potential offers for their internal candidate.

As the Rangers work through their managerial selection, the focus remains on nurturing their internal talent while ensuring a smooth transition in leadership.
