This is not the first time Gillispie has faced scrutiny. While serving as coach at Texas Tech from 2011 to 2012, he was confronted with allegations related to player mistreatment. His resignation in September 2012 was attributed to health concerns, shortly after the university announced its inquiry into the treatment of players under his guidance.
