CNN Stream Leaving HBO Max as Channel Plans New Launch Next Month

HBO Max will discontinue its live CNN news programming starting November 17, 2023. This change comes after two years of including CNN within its streaming service, managed by Warner Bros. Discovery.

CNN’s New Streaming Launch

The decision to remove CNN from HBO Max aligns with CNN’s upcoming launch of a direct-to-consumer streaming service. This new offering is expected to debut later this fall. As Warner Bros. Discovery restructures, it plans to eliminate some cable channels, including CNN, next year.

Impact on HBO Max Programming

Alongside the removal of CNN, HBO Max is also expected to lose most live sports programming. Discovery Inc. is expected to focus on its dedicated sports offering in the future.

Remaining CNN Content on HBO Max

Despite the removal of live programming, HBO Max will continue to provide selected CNN originals. Notable shows that will remain on the platform include:

  • Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown
  • Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy
  • The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper

Insights from CNN Executives

According to Alex MacCallum, Executive VP of Digital Products and Services at CNN, the partnership with HBO Max has offered valuable insights over the past two years. He stated, “CNN has benefitted tremendously from its two years of offering a live 24/7 feed of news to HBO Max customers.”

MacCallum emphasized that the network aims to build on the knowledge gained from HBO Max’s subscriber base. The goal is to enhance audience engagement with the upcoming new streaming service.
