Trade Sinks Former Alabama Running Back’s Playing Time

In the 2025 NFL season, Brian Robinson Jr., a former standout running back for Alabama, has faced challenges in securing playing time since joining the San Francisco 49ers. Acquired on August 22 in a trade with the Washington Commanders, Robinson’s role has diminished.

Robinson’s Performance and Role

After leading the Commanders in rushing for three consecutive seasons, Robinson has seen limited usage this year. Through the first four games, he has recorded:

  • 22 rushing attempts for 96 yards
  • Two receptions for 3 yards
  • Played 50 offensive snaps

His current role appears more as a safety net for star running back Christian McCaffrey rather than a direct backup.

Christian McCaffrey’s Dominance

McCaffrey, who led the NFL with 1,459 rushing yards in 2023, has experienced injury setbacks. He played only four games last season. This inconsistency has raised concerns about his long-term durability. General Manager John Lynch emphasized McCaffrey’s key role in the offense, saying he is difficult to take off the field due to his versatility. Despite this, Lynch expects Robinson to gain more opportunities as the season advances.

Robinson’s Adaptation

Robinson’s transition into the 49ers’ offense is ongoing. Lynch noted that Robinson is familiar with the playbook but needs to adjust to the team’s specific run style. His average of 4.4 yards per carry significantly exceeds McCaffrey’s 3.3 yards per carry this season. McCaffrey has accumulated 225 yards on 69 carries, also ranking high with 31 receptions and two touchdowns.

Upcoming Challenges

The 49ers are preparing for a pivotal match against the Los Angeles Rams, sporting a 3-1 record. Despite this success, they rank last in the NFC for rushing yards and are the only team without a rushing touchdown this season. Traditionally, rushing performance has been vital for success under head coach Kyle Shanahan. In past years, the 49ers have enjoyed significant victories correlated with top-tier rushing yardage.

Looking Ahead

Robinson expressed optimism about the team’s ground game improvement, indicating they are on the verge of unlocking their rushing potential. He understands the importance of adapting regardless of who is playing quarterback. As the team adjusts following quarterback Brock Purdy’s injury, Mac Jones takes the lead for the upcoming game. Robinson remains focused on team goals, sensing an opportunity for improvement as they face the Rams.
