Pelosi-Endorsed Candidate Joins San Francisco Supervisor Race

Health-care advocate Gary McCoy has officially entered the race for the District 8 supervisor seat in San Francisco. McCoy, who previously served as the campaign manager for former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Save Our Health Care initiative, is seeking to address key issues affecting the community.
Gary McCoy’s Background and Endorsements
A resident of District 8 for nearly two decades, McCoy currently lives in Twin Peaks with his husband. His leadership roles have included positions at the Alice B. Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club and the Harvey Milk Democratic Club. Notably, McCoy has earned the endorsement of Pelosi, who emphasized his capability to lead effectively at City Hall.
- Endorsements: Nancy Pelosi, National Union of Healthcare Workers
- Community support from supervisors: Matt Dorsey and Connie Chan
- Other endorsements: Former supervisor and State Senator Mark Leno, SF Public Defender Mano Raju
Pelosi stated, “Gary McCoy is a trusted, tested advocate who will bring thoughtful leadership and deep experience to the Board of Supervisors.”
Personal Journey and Advocacy
McCoy’s personal history includes overcoming challenges such as addiction, homelessness, and managing an untreated AIDS diagnosis. Now 15 years sober, he emphasizes the importance of transformational leadership for San Francisco.
“I know what it means to fight; I’ve fought for health care, for housing, for working families, and for our LGBTQ community,” McCoy commented. His experiences drive his commitment to helping others in similar situations.
McCoy’s Platform for District 8
McCoy’s campaign highlights several key objectives:
- Develop housing options across all levels, including affordable and market-rate units.
- Support Mayor Daniel Lurie’s Family Zoning plan, aimed at increasing neighborhood density along transit corridors.
- Expand mental health crisis response services in San Francisco.
- Invest in safe streets and reliable public transit.
Competition and Upcoming Events
McCoy enters a competitive race. Outgoing Supervisor Rafael Mandelman is endorsing café owner Manny Yekutiel, who is also running for the District 8 seat. Yekutiel’s café has been a community hub since its establishment.
The filing period for candidates will close in May 2026, with five supervisor seats available for election in November 2026. McCoy is expected to launch his campaign officially this Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Castro, marking the beginning of intense preparations for the upcoming electoral period.
