Inside the Unique Arena Built for The Hunger Games Event

The Canary Wharf area of London is transforming into a unique venue for the highly anticipated theatrical adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ iconic novel, The Hunger Games. This new production brings the Capitol to life, where children face off in deadly competitions. The creative team is developing a bespoke theatre that embodies the spirit of Collins’ work.

The Construction of a Unique Arena for The Hunger Games Event

At the heart of this project lies a temporary theatre designed to accommodate 1,200 seats. Since March, a plot of unused land has been converted into a 26-metre-tall structure covering 2,250 square metres. Producers Oliver Royds and Tristan Baker spearhead this initiative, ensuring no detail is overlooked.

A Marvel of Engineering

  • The theatre is constructed with 42,000 modular components made of aluminum and steel.
  • 95% of the theatre can be dismantled and moved using about 150 trucks.
  • The site features London’s largest hydraulic stage, enabling dramatic ascents for set pieces.

Royds and Baker, who also lead their own production companies, aim to offer a thrilling experience. The theatre’s design allows every seat to have an excellent view, as “you’re only ever 12 seats away from the action.”

The Vision Behind the Production

Conor McPherson’s adaptation combines elements from both the first book and film of The Hunger Games. The production involves a talented creative team, including director Matthew Dunster and designer Miriam Buether. Suzanne Collins herself has collaborated on the adaptation, bringing fresh ideas to the iconic universe.

“The audience of 25-40-year-olds grew up with these stories,” Royds points out. “It’s exciting to see them return.” With plans to explore the first three novels, the team is ready to pivot based on audience interest.

Entertainment Beyond Expectations

The theatre will also include amenities such as three large bars and a restaurant with views of the O2 arena, reflecting a commitment to audience experience.

  • Budget for the show and theatre: £26 million.
  • Cast of 23, including Mia Carragher as Katniss Everdeen.

This ambitious endeavour is designed not only to thrill fans of the original work but also to draw in a new audience. The creativity and flexibility built into the theatre’s design promise an unforgettable experience, appealing to lovers of theatre and literature alike.
