The surprising decision came on November 6, 2023, when Cubs president of baseball operations, Jed Hoyer, personally informed Ross of his termination.
Ross’s Emotions and Future Aspirations
After receiving the unexpected news, Ross reflected on his tenure. Despite leading the Cubs to an 83-79 record in his final season, he felt blindsided by the change. “It didn’t feel like my job was in jeopardy at any time,” Ross stated.
Now, the 48-year-old is actively seeking a new opportunity. “I want to manage again badly,” he expressed in a recent interview. This offseason, multiple managerial vacancies exist, including teams like the Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins, and San Francisco Giants. Additional openings may arise if other interim managers are not retained.
Cubs’ Shift in Management
The Cubs’ decision to part ways with Ross coincided with the hiring of Craig Counsell, who signed a record-breaking five-year, $40 million contract. This shift highlights the organization’s commitment to pursue experienced leadership.

Following his dismissal, the New York Yankees approached Ross regarding a role as bench coach, but he preferred a managerial position. He has expressed his openness to various opportunities moving forward.
