Ontario Boosts Daily Juror Compensation to $120 Without Employer Support

Starting today, Ontarians who are not compensated by their employers while serving on juries will receive a daily payment of $120. This change applies from the first day of jury duty, a significant update in the province’s jury compensation policy.

Increased Daily Juror Compensation in Ontario

The recent increase reflects a long-awaited change in the jury fee structure, which had remained unchanged since 1989. Historically, jurors in Ontario received no pay for the first ten days of service. From days 11 to 49, the compensation was only $40 per day. After the 49th day, jurors would receive $100 daily.

Support from Officials

Ontario’s Attorney General Doug Downey announced the new compensation during the opening ceremony of the courts in Toronto. He emphasized that this new rate is “long overdue” and aims to eliminate financial obstacles faced by potential jurors. With a more substantial compensation, officials hope to encourage greater participation in the juror system.

Community Impact

  • Mark Farrant, CEO of the Canadian Juries Commission, praised the increase.
  • He noted that better compensation will help create juries that reflect the diversity of Canadian society.
  • Many individuals in the wage sector or gig economy previously hesitated to serve due to low pay.

Farrant also pointed out the need for enhanced mental health support for jurors after trials. While the pay increase is a positive first step, there is still more work to be done to support those serving on juries.
