Hospital Unveils Cutting-Edge Tech for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Bluewater Health has introduced innovative breast imaging technology to enhance patient care. The hospital unveiled the Savi Scout technology, which improves breast cancer detection, diagnostics, and treatment for the Sarnia-Lambton community.

Advanced Technology Implementation at Bluewater Health

Alongside the Savi Scout, Bluewater Health has also adopted CADstream software. This advanced tool assists radiologists in interpreting MRI scans, leading to more precise diagnoses and effective treatment planning.

Expert Insight

Dr. Youssef Almalki, Director of Diagnostic Imaging, emphasized the hospital’s commitment to breast health. He stated, “With advancements like Savi Scout and CADstream, we can offer patients top-tier breast imaging and treatment planning, right in their community.”

How Savi Scout Works

  • The Savi Scout employs a wireless seed localizer instead of traditional wire localization.
  • This localizer acts as a radar reflector, enabling surgeons to locate tumors accurately using ultraviolet light.
  • The technology minimizes tissue removal, improving surgical outcomes for patients.

Dr. Almalki pointed out the financial considerations of this technology. Although the Savi Scout reflector costs approximately $500 compared to a $20 wire, the benefits justify the investment for optimal patient care.

Importance of Early Detection

Breast cancer remains the most prevalent cancer among women. Dr. Almalki stressed the importance of early detection, urging individuals to participate in screenings. “Your future self will thank you for it,” he added.

The Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) offers complimentary screenings for individuals aged 40 to 74. Appointments can be self-referred through Bluewater Health’s website or by calling their dedicated line.

Breast Cancer Screening Statistics

  • Average mammogram duration: less than 10 minutes.
  • 13% of breast cancer cases in Ontario are diagnosed in women aged 40–49.
  • More than 85% of breast cancer patients have no prior family history of the disease.

Community Engagement and Fundraising

To further support breast imaging initiatives, the Bluewater Health Foundation is organizing a fundraising event named “Brews for Breasts.” This event will take place on Wednesday, October 1, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Refined Fool Brewing Co. in Sarnia.

Fifteen percent of all food, beverage, and merchandise sales during the event will benefit the local mammography department, strengthening community support for breast health initiatives.
