LeBron Begins Camp Absence, Plans Extended Preparation Period

LeBron James will not participate in the start of the Los Angeles Lakers’ training camp due to a minor injury. Lakers coach JJ Redick reported that James is dealing with some nerve irritation in his glute. This decision comes as the four-time champion prepares for the upcoming NBA season.
LeBron’s Historic Season Ahead
LeBron is set to make history as the first player to compete for 23 seasons in the NBA. He will turn 41 in December, and his first game of the season will be against the Golden State Warriors next month. Redick emphasized the importance of managing James’ recovery carefully.
Extended Preparation Plans
Although the goal is for James to recover in time for the Warriors matchup, Redick noted that this year’s preparation will take longer. “It’s probably a little bit longer of a ramp-up leading into opening night for him,” Redick said. He acknowledged that James’ extensive experience in the league means understanding the need for a patient approach to ensure he is ready for the playoffs.
Previous Season Performance
Last season, James averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game. He initially aimed to play all 82 games but faced challenges with injuries, including an eight-day absence due to foot soreness. In contrast, he participated in three of six preseason games last year.
Cautious Approach for Longevity
James’ camp advised the Lakers to adopt a cautious strategy to maximize his availability for the season’s latter stages. As they kick off their six-game preseason against the Phoenix Suns in Palm Desert, California, on Friday, James will be absent from that match. Redick expressed hope that James could appear in at least one preseason game before the regular season starts.
Team Observations and Other Injuries
During the first practice, while James observed from the sidelines, teammates noted his continued influence. Guard Austin Reaves mentioned that James remains vocal, guiding players even from a distance.
