Recently, a Delta Air Lines flight from Lagos, Nigeria, to Atlanta, Georgia, experienced a safety incident that caused a diversion. On September 23, Delta Flight 55, which had taken off from Murtala Muhammed International Airport, was forced to change course shortly after departure when one of its galley ovens indicated a small-scale fire due to food debris igniting on the heating element.
According to Delta spokesperson Berj Alexanian, the crew identified the issue and, despite the fire being contained within the oven, promptly declared an emergency with air traffic control. The flight was diverted to Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Ghana, where it landed safely approximately an hour and a half later.
Passenger Safety and Precautionary Measures
The aircraft, an Airbus A330-200, was carrying a total of 201 individuals, including four pilots, nine flight attendants, and 188 passengers. Maintenance teams upon landing confirmed there was no damage from the fire, and fortunately, no injuries were reported among passengers or crew members.
Delta offered overnight accommodations to passengers, and the flight resumed its journey to Atlanta two days later, on September 25. Alexanian stated, “Our crew followed procedures diligently, ensuring the safety of our customers and crew. We sincerely apologize for the disruption and appreciate the patience of our passengers.”

This incident is not isolated; a similar case occurred in January 2024 when an American Airlines flight from Austin to Charlotte was diverted to Houston due to an oven fire in the forward galley of a Boeing 737-800.
